Recent events have brought us sad news of a shooting in San Bernardino.  While these tragic events are rare, we see this as an opportunity to remind our community of some important safety information relevant to this topic. The Department of Homeland Security defines an active shooter as,  "an individual(s) actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area; in most cases, active shooters use firearm[s] and there is no pattern or method to their selection of victims."

SCU has prepared some learning resources to help campus members familiarize themselves with ways to be better prepared in the event of an active shooter situation.First, we have training on how to specifically respond to these types of events from our “We Comply” vendor.  Additionally, a six minute video produced by “Ready Texas” is available for your review and consideration, as well.  Finally, the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Bureau of Investigation have additional resources available.  Links to all of these resources can be found on the Campus Safety page of MySCU:

We would also strongly encourage everyone to take time to familiarize themselves with SCU’s Emergency Notification System – known to us as Everbridge – and update their preferred contact methods in order that we might reach you as quickly as possible should an emergency arise.  More information about Everbridge, including a training video, can be found here:

If you have any questions, or if we can help you in any way, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Our hearts and thoughts go out to all the victims and families involved with this terrible tragedy.
