Introduction

• Any spillage of a dangerous chemical or radioactive material is to be reported immediately to Campus Security at x 333.
• When reporting, be specific about the nature of the involved material and the location. Campus Security will contact the necessary specialized authorities and medical personnel.

Personnel exposures/containmination

• Remove exposed/contaminated individual(s) from the area, unless it is unsafe to do so because of the medical condition of victim(s), or potential hazard to rescuer(s).
• Notify Campus Security at x333 if immediate medical attention is required. If life threatening, call 9-1-1.
• If the incident occurs during normal working hours, contact Campus Security at x333 and the Executive Director of Auxiliary Operations and Physical Plant at x515.
• Proceed to the nearest emergency eyewash station to flush contaminated eyes/skin for 15 minutes.
• Removed any contaminated clothing.
• Stand by to provide information or assistance, including SDS (Safety Data Sheets), to emergency response personnel (if they are dispatched).

Containmination of Equipment/Facilities

• Avoid spreading contamination by restricting access to the equipment/area to only those individuals who are properly protected and trained to work with the type of hazard.
• Report details and request assistance from Campus Security at x333 and The Executive Director of Auxiliary Operations and Physical Plant at x515.
• Do not attempt any cleanup or decontamination procedures alone or without proper attire, including appropriate respiratory protection if airborne hazards exist.
• Attempt spill cleanup only if you are familiar with the chemical properties of the spilled material and are trained to handle spills. If there is a liquid spill, attempt to contain it by using appropriate absorbent material.
• Decontaminate the equipment/area using appropriate methods under environmental health and safety direction.
• Label the waste bag with a Hazardous Waste Label and call Campus Security at x333 for pick up.
